Australia extends border closure

Australia’s borders remain closed for at least another three months. Most of the nation’s states plan to be able to open their borders to each other just in time for Christmas.

According to current regulations, only citizens or people with a permanent residence permit can enter the country. Passenger ships with more than 100 passengers cannot dock in Australian ports and Australian citizens cannot leave the country. These rules, which came into effect in March, will continue to apply until December 17, Health Minister Greg Hunt said in a statement.

“The Australian Health Protection Committee believes that the international and national COVID-19 situation continues to pose an unacceptable risk to public health,” the statement said.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said during a press conference that seven of the country’s eight states and territories agreed to open their borders in December. Morrison also says talks are underway with New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern about creating the so-called travel bubble between countries.

According to the authorities, a total of more than 26,000 cases of covid-19 have been confirmed in the country, about 680 people have died.
