Hundreds of New Zealand travelers have arrived in Sydney, a cautious first step when Australia opens up to quarantined tourists.

The rules are part of a new so-called travel bubble jointly planned by Australia and New Zealand. So far, however, the rules are not reciprocal: arriving in New Zealand must be quarantined for two weeks at a cost of NZ $ 3,100 (a little over 18,000 kroner).

“This is an important first step in getting international travel back on track and we hope that Prime Minister (Jacinda) Ardern (of New Zealand) will soon do a disservice,” said Gladys Berejiklian, Prime Minister of New South Wales.

Australia, like much of the rest of the world, has been hit by a second wave of infection. But the number of new cases is small compared to the outbreaks in Europe and North America.
