The ship was heading for Europe when it sank off the port of al-Khums off the Libyan coast.
The United Nations International Organization for Migration (IOM) claims that at least 74 people have drowned. On board were a total of 120 migrants, including women and children. So far, 31 bodies have been rescued, the UN writes in a statement.
Only 47 people were able to be rescued by the country’s coast guard and the fishing boats that together helped bring the people ashore.
Infamous port
There is no information yet on the cause of the rollover. However, the IOM claims that the port is known to be dangerous.
“IOM reiterates that Libya is not a safe haven for return and calls on the EU and the international community to take immediate action to end this cycle of exploitation;“Writes the UN body Twitter.
Today’s shipwreck is the eighth to occur in the Mediterranean since October 1. Since the beginning of the year, at least 900 migrants have drowned in the sea, writes the IOM.
