The results of a large study of the Astra Zeneca vaccine, developed by researchers at the University of Oxford, indicate that there is a low risk of serious side effects.
As previously reported, the vaccine is 70 percent effective, but 90 percent effective when patients receive one and a half doses.
Only three of the 23,745 people who participated in the international study, after an average of 3.4 months of follow-up, had serious side effects that can be related to the study, that is, 0.012 percent.
One of them received the vaccine and the other was in a control group, and they received a meningococcal vaccine or a saline solution, so they did not receive the side effect due to the Astra Zeneca vaccine.
The group affiliation of the third person is kept secret from the researchers until now.
Serious side effects: blood cells break down
The first person, who thus received the Astra Zeneca vaccine, suffered from hemolytic anemia, a disease in which red blood cells break down faster than usual.
The other person who did not receive the vaccine is the one who was denounced by the international media already last fall, and who forced Astra Zeneca to temporarily suspend the study. The person developed an inflammation of the spinal cord.
The third, whose group affiliation is unknown, had a high fever of over 40 degrees but recovered quickly and did not need to be hospitalized.
The other two have made a full recovery or are on the road to recovery, and all three are still in the study, the researchers write.
