Astra Zeneca pauses her coronary vaccine.
The reason is that a voluntary test person suffered from a “potentially unexplained illness,” reports the US medical site Stat.
Astra Zeneca is in trial phase 3 of the corona vaccine that many countries around the world are waiting for.
But on Tuesday night, the Swedish-British company announced that they were suspending the process. This is because an issue in the UK “received a serious reaction”. As a precautionary measure, all vaccine tests are temporarily suspended.
A spokesperson for Astra Zeneca said in a statement that it was a “routine action to be taken when potentially unexplained illness occurs during a trial.”
Examine the incident
The company writes that they are working hard to expedite the investigation of the incident, so that the process of developing a vaccine is not delayed. They emphasize that it is not certain that the disease has something to do with the vaccine tests.
It is not clear in what way the person became ill. But a source with knowledge of the company tells the Stat medical site that the test person “is expected to recover.”
It is not uncommon for vaccines to be stopped during clinical trials. How long Astra Zeneca’s break will last is still unknown. But according to the BBC, who spoke to a person on the investigation team, it is probably only a matter of a few days.
Sweden has bought 6 million doses
Several countries have already entered into agreements with the pharmaceutical company to buy vaccines when they are approved. Sweden, together with the EU, has bought 300 million doses in advance, of which 6 million will go to Sweden.
– Those who get it first are probably people in the risk group and people in health and care, Social Affairs Minister Lena Hallengren previously told TT.
Currently, nine corona vaccines have entered the third and final phase of testing.
