The Swedish-British pharmaceutical giant Astra Zeneca is buying the American pharmaceutical company Alexion Pharmaceuticals. Astra Zeneca pays the equivalent of $ 175 per share, clearly more than Friday’s closing price of $ 121. The total price of the acquisition will be 39,000 million dollars, a little more than 330,000 million Swedish crowns.

The boards of both companies approved the plans, but since approval from owners and authorities is also required, the purchase is expected to be completed during the third quarter of next year.

“The acquisition allows us to be even stronger in immunology. We look forward to welcoming our new colleagues to Alexion so that together we can build on our combined expertise,” said Pascal Soriot, CEO of Astra Zeneca, in a press release.

Astra Zeneca estimates that the acquisition could lead to a spending reduction of $ 500 million per year, through efficiencies, synergies and savings.

Alexion had just over 3,000 employees in 2019 and had sales of approximately $ 20 billion.
