Iceland spoke about how their mentality would be decisive in qualifying for the European Championship in Gamla Ullevi. After the 1-1 game against Sweden in Reykjavik last month, it was the Icelandic players who disappointed the most. And before Tuesday’s return leg in Gothenburg, the Icelanders were full of confidence and convinced that an explosion against the current World Cup bronze medalist was entirely possible.

But Iceland had to leave Gamla Ullevi with a 0-2 loss, and the arrogance of the guests seems to have given the Swedish players additional motivation.

– To be honest: yes. Because I think the mentality we have in Sweden is incredibly high. And we show it today, says Kosovar Asllani.

– They have spoken a lot about their mentality and that they were very proud of the game they played in Iceland against us. But they may not have explored us because they didn’t know that we had so many more levels to us. We knew we were underperforming in Iceland.

For the Real Madrid midfielder, the 2-0 victory didn’t just mean a guaranteed ticket to the Euro. It also showed that this Swedish team stands up in decisive matches, he says.

– We totally dominated the game and we remained firm in the melee game. We have a very good international game. We go out today and show that we are a national team and that we are usually the best when it comes to it.
