A 200-second review of H&M has made a big impact.
In the show, several employees of the clothing giant testify about how customers are treated differently, something that is also revealed with a hidden camera.
Following the post, several clients and employees have reached out and shared similar stories.
The company has also received harsh criticism on its official Facebook page, where several say they will stop buying from H&M.
The Minister for Gender Equality, Åsa Lindhagen, who is the Minister responsible for work against discrimination and segregation, has participated in the review.
– It is very clear what applies: we have a discrimination law. All store owners have a responsibility to ensure that store personnel do not discriminate against their customers. And I also think that any company that gets signals that customers are being discriminated against, I guess they go to the bottom with that.
– It is obvious that you must do everything possible to comply with Swedish law.
The Minister for Gender Equality, Åsa Lindhagen, who is the Minister responsible for work against discrimination and segregation, has participated in the review.
Lindhagen says that she is “very affected” by the 200-second review and that she sees that people are treated in different ways:
– As a minister, I cannot decide if the law is broken, it is up to the courts to judge individual cases. But I want to be very clear that discrimination law prohibits discrimination.
She continues:
– I think it is incredibly important to be clear on that, and that we, from the political side, must defend the equal value of all people, defend ourselves because we do not accept discrimination and racism. And also do something about it. There, I think it is extremely important to pay attention to these problems and what they mean in concrete terms.
Lindhagen urges clients who have experienced similar situations to turn to the Ombudsman Against Discrimination and, according to the Minister for Gender Equality, the legislation should be stricter.
– We need to strengthen the legislation on discrimination. Employers also have a responsibility to work to prevent discrimination, which should not be in a workplace, for example. But if you don’t do this job, not much happens today. There we have a consultation that presents proposals this December. Which is precisely about whether we must create consequences if you do not follow this that you must work preventively. I think there are reasons to do so.
