Turkish police arrested at least 50 protesters in front of a court in Istanbul, a group of students said. The videos showed how the police, after the skirmishes, dragged the detainees onto the police buses.

For almost three months, there have been protests against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan who appointed a pro-regime rector to head Istanbul’s prestigious Bogazici University.

Those arrested on Friday protested in court that some 20 students had suffered the same fate the day before on the university campus.

The protests at Bogazici University began in early January and soon spread to Istanbul and then other cities. Some 600 people have been arrested and there have been several violent clashes between protesters and the police.

Erdogan calls the protesters “terrorists” and “LGBTQ youth” who undermine “national and religious values.”
