A group of gunmen who entered the eastern Congo-Kinshasa city of Bunia on Friday were driven out of the city by local security forces.

The men, all wearing white headbands, were reportedly fighting for the Congolese Democratic Coalition (Codeco) militia. They surrounded the city jail where they shouted that the prisoners who belonged to the movement must be released.

The gunmen made their way to other buildings in the city before local security forces found them forcing them into three cars that were later pulled out of the city. No weapons were fired during the incident.

The armed group has long spread fear in eastern Congo-Kinshasa and the UN has warned that abuses by militias could be a crime against humanity. Between March and June, the riots forced more than 400,000 people to flee their homes, according to UN figures.
