games The game “Animal crossing: New horizon” for the Nintendo Switch console has stopped on the Chinese market. This is after Joshua Wong, leader of the Hong Kong democratic movement, showed off an island he created in-game. On it he had placed a banner with the message “Liberate Hong Kong – revolution now”.
In “Animal crossing”, players can decorate their small island communities in pastel colors and invite other players’ animal figures to visit them.
The acclaimed game was released last month, but is not available on the open market in China. Chinese citizens who want to play are referred to foreign editions of the game available in the so-called “gray market”, through gaming platforms such as Pinduoduo and Taobao.
Since Joshua Wong placed the acclaimed flag on his island, it has not been possible to search for the “animal crossing” on the platforms. It is unclear if this is due to a direct order from the Chinese authorities or if the gaming platforms are afraid of ending up in a political context.
