Angelina Friedman, a 102-year-old New York resident, has recovered from COVID-19 during the year.

Twice.

– My mother has a desire to survive that she had never seen before, says her daughter.

He survived the Spanish flu in 1918, survived cancer, and has now survived the coronavirus for the second time. It seems 102-year-old Angelina Friedman can handle most things.

It was in March of this year that Friedman first tested positive for COVID, when he would have a minor operation on his leg. His daughter, Joanne Merola, was surprised that her mother was not ill.

– I hardly had any symptoms. The worst symptom she had was a small fever that lasted about 10 days, Joanne Merola tells NBC News.

After a week in the hospital, she was released to continue her recovery at the nursing home where she lives. Friedman recovered quickly and in April the corona test came back negative.

But in October, just before his 102nd birthday, he contracted the virus again. This time the symptoms worsened and Friedman became very ill.

She had a cough, became lethargic, and had a fever. According to the daughter, it was a big difference from the first time you barely realized she was sick.

Friedman was placed in isolation at the nursing home and received treatment. About a month and two negative tests later, he was finally able to return to his room.

Wants to give hope to others

Angelina Friedman was born in October 1918 on a ship carrying immigrants from Italy to New York. It was the same year that the Spanish flu hit, the pandemic that affected some 500 million people and tens of millions lost their lives. Friedman’s own mother died in childbirth.

Today, Friedman is happy and healthy, even though she is nearly deaf and has lost most of her sight. Pandemics and cancer have not stopped her from crossing the centenary mark and she has outlived her ten siblings and her husband.

The daughter hopes that her mother’s story can give hope to other people.

– My mother has been through a lot in her life. You can’t just give up, you have to fight, my mother has a will to stay alive that she has never seen before, her daughter Joanne Merola tells the news site.
