The anemia is partially acute at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in western Sweden, reports DN. Planned surgeries can be canceled if the situation worsens and the deficiency applies to two blood groups.
– It’s very serious. If there are more emergencies, then the situation will be even more tense, Jan Holgersson, Sahlgrenska’s operations manager, tells DN.
Already this summer, Sahlgrenska warned of a reduction in blood levels. Calls for the need to get blood donors to donate blood have not helped.
One reason for the shortage is considered to be the current corona pandemic.
The deficiency affects blood groups 0 negative and A negative. Holgersson says that the deficiency has been acute for a couple of days and that reflection should prevail if a patient belonging to one of the two current blood groups is to be operated on.
