Many older people may have isolated themselves even more than they really need during the pandemic, says state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell in SVT’s Helgstudion.

The Swedish Public Health Agency is now working hard to ease the restrictions.

– I think we are quite close to finding a good model for it, he says.

The recent increase in the spread of the infection worries the Public Health Agency, which expects the curve to level out to a more stable level, as it hopes to ease restrictions on the elderly and people in risk groups soon.

– Older people have been very isolated and we work hard to find structures so that you can be in contact with your loved ones in a better way and I think we are quite close to finding a good model for that, says Tegnell in SVT’s Morgonstudio.

Furthermore, Tegnell says that the way they have chosen to interpret the restrictions has been mixed, but that he believes many have isolated themselves even more than they would need.

– In fact, you can go out and meet people as long as you keep your distance. There are many models in which you can have a social life even in these circumstances, Tegnell says, explaining that they are now working hard to develop solutions that allow older people to spend more time with their loved ones.

Most critical vaccine

– We have something that is almost clear, but the situation now with slightly increased cases worries us a little and we would like it to stabilize a little more. But we want to be able to give a little more advice that you as seniors and at-risk people should be able to move a little more freely in society again, Tegnell tells SVT.

In the future, the issue of vaccines will be important, says Tegnell.

– Among the most critical right now are vaccines and the research that shows they can really help us. I think it is still not very clear. Who to give them to, how to give them and what effect they will have.

– You would also like to know what are the really dangerous situations, what should we prioritize and make sure you find yourself in situations. I think it’s still a bit vague, he tells SVT.

Consideration for a long time

When asked when the crown ends, Tegnell replies:

– We do not know. We must learn to live with this on some level. There is plenty of evidence that we will get rid of this entirely, at least for the foreseeable future. However, we will get better tools to be able to handle it and live longer as we did before.

– But this will be a disease that we have to take into account to some extent for a long time, he tells SVT.
