Sports holidays in late February, especially week nine, when Stockholm schoolchildren have free time, will likely be associated with the corona pandemic forever. A few weeks after tens of thousands of Swedes returned from ski resorts in northern Italy and Austria, the infection began to spread rapidly in Sweden.
A lot has happened since then. More than 100,000 Swedes have been confirmed to be infected with covid-19, in the EU and the UK there are 5.2 million cases of covid-19.
Before next week’s fall break State epidemiologist Anders Tegnell presented a series of guidelines at the Public Health Agency press conference Thursday.
– It is important to travel wisely and well so that many new chains of contagion are not created. If you can avoid riding public transportation, you should. And if it’s possible to book seat tickets, you should, says Anders Tegnell.
– Stay home if you have symptoms, make sure you can isolate yourself even where you go if you have symptoms, remember not to charge medical care there. And even if we no longer have any advice and recommendations, you should meet with older relatives, it is important to think about how to do it, so as not to expose anyone to unnecessary risks, he says.
What is the biggest difference now compared to sports vacations?
– In relation to sports holidays, we had a wide spread of the infection in much of Europe, but we did not know it. The only country that had clearly sent a signal that they had a wide spread of the infection was Italy. We didn’t really have any spread of the infection in Sweden.
– We now have a fairly large spread of infection in Sweden. We have good control over which parts of Europe also have a spread of the infection, so the current situation is completely different.
Although many choose to travel Abroad, the spread of the infection in Sweden will not be greatly affected this time, according to Anders Tegnell.
– The trips abroad were very motivating in regards to the presentation. When we originally had no cases in Sweden, the introduction of several hundred cases from the rest of the world became a very large proportion of the spread of infection in Sweden.
– We now have several thousand new cases a week. If we then return home with a handful of cases from abroad, the epidemiology in Sweden will not change.
How to think about a trip abroad?
– Above all, you have to think carefully if you really want to travel, because it is quite difficult to travel at this time. There are many different requirements in different countries, requirements that can change quickly. There are many examples of people who got stuck in different parts of Europe when the rules changed.
In the past few days alone, several countries have announced tougher restrictions. France extends night curfew. Ireland closes the company for the second time.
– Then you have to think about whether to travel to a region with very high risks. In that case, you have to be very careful when you get home. Stay home if you feel the slightest symptom, go and test yourself if there’s the slightest doubt, and work from home for a while if possible, says Anders Tegnell.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises against traveling abroad to all countries outside the EU and EEA. Currently, ordinary travel insurance does not apply to travel to other parts of the world.
