Anders Björkman: Vaccine is not an obvious path to herd immunity

Mass vaccination will be the rescue for the covid-19 epidemic in Sweden. Two main objectives stand out: first, to save lives, but also to stop the epidemic. The faster and more doses of vaccine, the better and more effective our politicians and authorities perceive. Pfizer’s first deliveries seem to arrive between Christmas and New Years at the same time and fairly to all EU countries. The complicated logistics around the storage of the Pfizera vaccine (-80 degrees) will be solved after a logistically unique investment. The first vaccines are imminent.

Swedish vaccine coordinator Richard Bergström confirms on SvD that “until summer, everyone should have been able to get vaccinated.” And further: “This will change everything: the regions will quickly achieve a vaccination of 60 to 70 percent, which can give herd immunity.” Nursing homes, staff and some family members, as well as home care staff, will be vaccinated within a few weeks. Then come other population groups, 75+ and risk groups and finally all those who want / accept up to 16 years. This positive vision is shared by the municipalities and regions of Sweden and more. But how safe and well thought out is it?
