Finally! 16 days after Joe Biden was declared the winner of the presidential election, the incoming administration can begin the formal transition.
It was deep inside.
In her letter, Emily Murphy, head of the General Services Administration, who opens the door to Biden, writes that she made her decision based on the result of the judicial review of the election results. Murphy, who previously worked for the Republican Party, says she “worked independently” and that the White House did not force her to wait for the green light. Of course, insults can look different and we don’t know exactly what happened.
Some more options letting Biden in didn’t exist. In Michigan, the outcome of Monday’s elections was in his favor, a setback for President Trump who saw the state as his own and who pushed Republicans from there. At the same time, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled that the 8,329 votes that the Trump campaign alleged were invalid due to errors in signing must be counted.
Some cases are still pending: In Georgia, the third vote recount will take place on Tuesday, following the demands of the Trump campaign.
But increasingly bizarre attempts to portray the elections as subject to mass manipulation have run aground. Donald Trump’s own attorney, Rudy Giuliani, admitted that the big-city vote manipulation he commented on on closer inspection was “a bit of a stretch.” All of Trump’s legal team is devoid of evidence and in shambles.
Of course, Trump knows.
For him is the message of the General Services Administration nail in the coffin in regards to this election. He tweeted that he was the one who asked Murphy to invite Biden, but that he still believes in his case. If either of the two is true it matters less.
Perhaps it also doesn’t matter that Trump will likely never explicitly admit defeat. It is in line with his usual behavior and should not surprise anyone. This is not the same as not paying attention to such violations of the norms: when frames of reference are changed, it is easy to become blind to the abnormal, if one does not formulate what is happening.
A growing number of Republicans at higher levels have flagged Trump’s vain and dangerous attempts to challenge the electoral process in the past 24 hours, but the signals came so late that they are almost uncountable and prominent names are still missing.
Republicans know, of course that Biden won, but has wanted to avoid confrontation with President Trump, on whose electorate many of them depend. There is also a will to keep the party together before the elections in Georgia in early January, when two senators will be elected. So the entire majority in the Senate is at stake.
Conservatives and Republicans who have no choice but to lose have been clearer. On Monday, more than 100 national security experts, with experience in various Republican administrations, issued a joint appeal to Republicans in Congress to rule on the elections, for democracy and the security of the country. Among other things, they noted that the late handover after the 2000 elections may have contributed to the failure of the 2001 terrorist attack. It is highly uncertain whether the letter had any effect on politicians: in the past, no appeals have been made Similar.
Donald Trump character The proximity, according to US media sources, has tried to persuade the president that it was time to surrender. He understands that the election is lost, he has stayed at home, calmer than usual. What will be your next move. His campaign has raised money to run election-related processes, and now there is speculation that Trump might want to use it to pay off his debts.
Biden has not erupted, despite the frustrating situation. He has worked, has started to introduce ministers and staff, signaling about priorities.
You have no time to waste.
With Monday’s message Biden’s team can finally begin to use the resources, in the form of, say, money, facilities and practical help, that an incoming administration needs and is entitled to. They will probably first launch on all the available information about the pandemic, in order to implement their own strategy. They also need to quickly get acquainted with secret matters. It will also be exciting to see how much of how the Trump administration has handled the administration finally leaks out. Is there order or chaos?
Joe Biden will also face opposition in the future: Many of his appointments must be approved by the Senate, where Republicans have little to gain from cooperation.
But first Biden can celebrate his Thanksgiving, and that speaks now that he can enter without hindrance. That’s a relief: the system still worked.
But it may be good to keep this in mind for a while longer: the process that should have come naturally in a democracy has not been the case in the United States, this time.
