The human rights organization Amnesty explains its decision by saying that it has previously made statements that “defend hatred”.
According to the London-based organization, Navalny has not withdrawn statements about, for example, migrants in Russia.
“Some of these statements, from which Navalny has not officially retracted, reach the limit of defending hate, and this is not in line with Amnesty’s definition of a prisoner of conscience,” the organization wrote, according to AFP.
Some of the statements were made 15 years ago, writes the British BBC, where Navalnyj resembled the immigrants in Russia to cockroaches.
At the same time, Amnesty claims that it continues to work for the release of Navalny in Russia.
“As far as we know, Navalny has not made a similar statement in recent years, and this decision does not change our willingness to fight for his immediate release,” the organization wrote in its decision.
However, a representative of the organization in Russia tells the BBC that he believes the decision is due to a “coordinated campaign” to try to smear Navalny, thus reducing the weight of Amnesty demands for Navalny’s release.
