Formal charges have been filed against the two Americans suspected of being involved in last weekend’s alleged coup attempt against Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro, state prosecutor Tarek William Saab says.

The two former US soldiers are formally charged with terrorism, conspiracy, illegal arms trafficking, and participation in a criminal network.

They risk up to 25 to 30 years in prison, according to the state attorney.

The government has said eight people died when the country’s army and police detained a group of mercenaries trying to enter Venezuela in the port city of La Guaira, near the Caracas international airport, early Sunday morning.

At the same time, 13 people were arrested, including the two US citizens, who have since appeared on state television and in unclear terms acknowledged their involvement in the operation.

Venezuela blames the United States and opposition leader Juan Guaidó for the “invasion,” which they allegedly organized to pave the way for a coup. Something that has definitely been denied by both Guaidó and the United States government.
