Ambassadors from almost 50 countries accredited to Poland have written an open letter to the government of their host country urging it to respect the rights of LGBTQ people.
Issues regarding the rights of LGBTQ people have been a hot topic in Poland in recent years. The ruling National Conservative Law and Justice Party, for example, has said that LGBT rights are part of an “invasive foreign ideology that undermines Polish values and the status of the nuclear family.” There have also been campaigns in which “LGBTQ ideology” has been compared to communism.
“We would like to express our support for raising public awareness about the issues related to gay, bisexual, trans and queer groups, intersex people and other groups in Poland facing similar challenges,” the letter, signed by most of the ambassadors of the EU in the countries of the EU, as well as the ambassadors of the USA, Canada, India, Japan and Israel, among others.
The Swedish Ambassador, Stefan Gullgren, is one of the signatories.
