The wild boar that became ill was sent for testing and a few days later two more wild boars were sent that had shown similar symptoms. A week later, the answer came from the Swedish Veterinary Institute, SVA. The wild boar had salmonella and the samples indicated the unusual Salmonella Choleraesuis.

There will be no wild boars in Öster Malma for some time

After the SVA sampling, the Swedish Board of Agriculture decided that all wild boars in the enclosure would be killed. And on Wednesday the final answer of the analysis came: it was Salmonella Choleraesuis.

– It is sad for us because this wild boar enclosure was very popular with both the school classes and the visitors. We can actually buy wild boar from other enclosures, but the land has to be decontaminated first, says Ulf Sterler.

According to him, the soil must be decontaminated to eliminate all parasites and bacteria and must be left to rest for at least a year.

According to the Swedish Board of Agriculture, it is it is not clear how the wild boar got infected.

Öster Malma functions as the head office for the Swedish Hunters Association, but the facility also has several enclosures with Swedish wild animals, including wild boar.
