The critic of the Russian regime Alexei Navalny was “undoubtedly” poisoned with the nerve agent Novichok.
This was stated by the German government in a press release on Wednesday.
“The crime against Alexei Navalny is directed at the fundamental values and rights that we defend,” Angela Merkel said.
Opposition politician Alexei Navalny was on a flight from Tomsk to Moscow in late August this year when he fell ill with symptoms of poisoning.
After the plane was forced to make an emergency landing in the city of Omsk, where Navalny was rushed to hospital, he was transferred by German ambulance to Berlin for additional care.
On Wednesday, the German government announced in a press release that the tests show it “without a doubt” to be the Soviet nerve agent Novitjok.
Merkel on the new data
German Chancellor Angela Merkel commented on the incident at a press conference this afternoon. She began by saying that it is now possible to leave out of all reasonable doubt that Alexei Navalny was the subject of an attack.
He also says this raises questions that only the Russian government can answer.
– The crime against Alexei Navalny targets the fundamental values and rights that we defend, according to Focus.
Same married as Skripal
The blood samples were analyzed in a German military hospital and Germany is now urging Russia to explain its role in the ensemble.
The German Foreign Ministry will summon the Russian ambassador and brief the EU and NATO members on the test results and discuss how to proceed with the information.
Novitjok is the same neurotoxin ex-spy Sergej Skripal and his daughter Julia were exposed to in southern England at Salisbury 2018.
British government concerned
British Chancellor Dominic Raab says, as does Angela Merkel, that Russia must answer questions about this incident.
“I am deeply concerned that Alexei Navalny was poisoned by Novichok, a neurotoxin that has previously been used with fatal outcome in the UK,” he said, according to Sky.
In Twitter Boris Johnsson, the country’s prime minister, announces that the UK will work with its international partners to ensure justice is served.
“Pure lie”
Russian state television channel Rossiya 1 previously claimed that Navalny fell ill after drinking an energy drink.
Something that is rejected by the Navalny staff as a “pure lie”.
– Alexei did not drink any energy drinks, explained Navalny press secretary Kira Yarmysh, claiming that the only thing he had before the Moscow light was a cup of tea.
Navalny is currently in a coma, but according to the Charité hospital where he is being treated, he will survive, but it is not clear in what state.
