The test results show that the Russian opposition leader was poisoned by the neurotoxin novitjok, the German government claims according to Reuters. Navalny collapsed during a flight on August 20 and has recently been treated at the Charité Hospital in Berlin. As early as last week, doctors declared that preliminary test results showed poisoning.

Chancellor Angela Merkel’s spokeswoman Steffen Seibert said in a statement Wednesday that a German military laboratory had confirmed that tests had found “a chemical neurotoxin from the novitjok group.”

Poisoned Skripal

It was the nerve agent novitjok that poisoned former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter in the UK in March 2018.

Russian doctors who treated Navalny in Siberia before he was taken to Berlin have repeatedly said they ruled out poisoning as his tests for toxic substances came back negative, Reuters writes.

According to Russia’s RIA news agency, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said they had not yet been informed of the test results.

Continuing in a coma

According to the latest information from the Charité Hospital, Navalny is still in a coma, but the situation is said to be stable.
