Alexei Navalny was not poisoned by Novichok

The poisoned Russian politician Alexei Navalny is being treated in a Berlin hospital and appears to have a good chance of survival.

Russian chemist Vladimir Uglev does not believe Navalny was poisoned with Novitjok, the nerve agent used against Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter in 2018, writes Dagens Nyheter.

Developed Novitjok

And Uglev knows what he’s talking about, because he’s the chemist Novitjok developed in a secret Soviet laboratory in the 1970s.

– If it were Novitjok, it is unlikely that Navalny would have survived. At least if he got it through tea, Vladimir Uglev tells DN Russia correspondent Anna-Lena Laurén.

He explains that Navalny was poisoned through his tea unlike his father and daughter Skripal, who were poisoned by Novitjok through their skin in the UK in 2018.

Faster symptoms if swallowed

Navalny would hardly have survived if he had ingested the same poison because symptoms would appear much faster, he believes.

The chemist is convinced that the Russian security service is behind the poison attacks in both cases.

German doctors treating Navalny in Berlin believe he has been poisoned with a mix of neurotoxins and pesticides, as does Bulgarian arms dealer Emilian Gebrev, who caused dissatisfaction with the Russian regime in 2015 when he sold weapons to Ukraine, reports DN .

Good opportunities

Uglev believes that the Russian politician has a good chance of survival, even if it is not clear under what conditions.

– It all depends on whether the poison has damaged the brain. In that case, the consequences can be severe, he says, noting that there are poisoning victims who have fully recovered.
