A fine of 3 million Swedish crowns threatens Uppsala University Hospital if the carcinogenic formalin is not handled safer for staff, reports Occupational Safety and Health.

Formalin is used to store autopsy samples. Approximately 35 tons go to the pathologist annually.

The excess formalin is disposed of in the sewer and cut off by the Swedish Work Environment Authority. “There is a risk of harmful inhalation exposure and exposure from skin contact and splashes in the eyes,” the agency states after an inspection.

By October 1, 2021, the hospital must demonstrate that the handling has been made safe enough through proper working methods and adaptation of work facilities and equipment.

Formalin is a preservative and disinfectant and is classified as a product called CMR (carcinogens, mutagenic and reproductive disorders).
