It was two teams that during the season had the stamp of the crisis on them that marched towards a cold Friends arena.
Before the match, Grzelak stressed the importance of making a good start, which he thought could be decisive in the match.
AIK got the start Grzelak hoped for.
On Sebastian Larsson’s first corner kick, Henok Goitom was supporting the ball. After just under four minutes, Larsson hit the next corner, Filip Rogic came on top and nodded at 1-0, the midfielder’s first goal in the AIK jersey.
– I have to keep going into the corners and avoid blocking, it’s a good ball from Seb and it’s just to put it there, says Rogic.
IFK Gothenburg had initially difficult to beat in the middle of the AIK field and at times he was forced to throw the ball in a panic.
– They go into the game and have some ball, we could get a little anxious about the ball, says Grzelak.
Henok Goitom should have done better when he had a chance to head 2-0 early in the second half, but the ball went straight into the arms of goalkeeper Ioannis Anestis.
After just over an hour of play, Goitom took the ball out of the penalty area, appeared to slip but regained his balance and shot with a shot that Anestis had no chance.
– Henok makes a fantastic goal. I’m so happy that’s why it got some criticism this year. When the situation was at its worst at the club, he played each and every game, although he may not have been fit and healthy the entire time, praises Grzelak.
At the end of August, Pontus Wernbloom returned to IFK Gothenburg after eleven years abroad.
Wernbloom left the club as a midfielder but will return as a forward. That night it was as freezing as the October afternoon.
The only time he got hot was when he faced hockey Henok Goitom.
“Get up, Enoch,” Wernbloom yelled angrily.
IFK Gothenburg did not play a bad game, but the game was sometimes too slow, which meant that the AIK defense had time to recover.
AIK came into play without Nabil Bahoui and Ebenezer Ofori, both injured. Erik Ring, 18, made his first match early on and performed well on the edge.
– He played for this chance. Bear in mind that it was his first match from the start in the Allsvenskan and he did a fantastic defensive job, praises Grzelak.
At the start of the season, Bartosz Grezelak was Roland Nilsson’s assistant coach on the U21 team.
When the crisis hit, Grezelak had to take over AIK and Nilsson IFK Gothenburg. Tonight Grzelak Nilsson clicked his nose.
– We had a good collaboration, so it’s not something I think about, says Grzelak.
In Gothenburg, Giorgi Kharaishvili returned after a long injury, but it was not enough to start an effective offense.
AIK and IFK Gothenburg, who will face Malmö FF at home in the next round, are among the greats of Swedish football. But tonight the team played to avoid looking back at the table, both relegation and the ghosts of the classification lurk in the table.
It was AIK who won the lottery, but it was hardly a lottery.
