After a calmer period, we are now seeing a doubling in the number of new corona cases recently in Stockholm.

But we are still far from the high spread of infection we had in the spring.

– We are now in a situation where we have about 50 times fewer infections than during the peak this spring, says Agnes Wold.

In recent weeks, the number of new corona cases per week has doubled in the Stockholm Region. But the situation nationwide is far from as bad as it was during the peak last spring.

– We are now in a situation where we have 50 times fewer infections than during the peak this spring, says Agnes Wold, a doctor and professor of clinical bacteriology at the University of Gothenburg.

During the situation when the infection was at its worst, far fewer samples were taken than are taken today. Something that makes it a bit difficult to compare infection rates today and this spring.

– During the peak of the Swedish epidemic, we had an estimated 10,000 to 30,000 cases per day. Now we have dropped to a level between 200 and 400 cases per day, says Agnes Wold.

According to Agnes Wold's calculations, the infection is still 50 times lower than when it was at its worst in Sweden.

“Severe” increase in Stockholm

Although the situation in Sweden is far from being last spring, local statistics from the Stockholm Region show that new cases have doubled in recent weeks.

– What we see now is a change in trend. We have gone from a stable level to a small increase during the end of the summer and what we are seeing now is a worrying and serious increase. Infection appears to be on the rise, says Maria Rotzén Östlund, an infection control physician in the Stockholm Region.

You don’t know why the infection is spreading in Stockholm at this time.

– It’s speculation. But now that it is getting dark and cold, we meet again inside. And when we do, the risk of infection increases, he says.

Another reason may be that more people have returned to their workplace after a vacation period and have worked from home. What now applies to reducing the infection is to follow the recommendations that exist.

– We’ll see this as an alarm clock. What matters is what we have said since the beginning of the pandemic: if you are going to find yourself, do it from a distance, if you start to feel bad: stay home and wash your hands and keep your distance, he says.

Family quarantine can become a reality

In Stockholm, a local restriction on a type of family quarantine was discussed. This means that those who live with someone infected with the virus must stay home. No decision has been made on this, but Maria Rotzén Östlund says it is still being discussed.

– It doesn’t have to be something negative. We’re not talking about a foot shackle, but you should stay home and not go to work if you live with someone who is sick, he says.

If other local restrictions have been discussed and what they are in that case, Maria Rotzén Östlund is unable to reply at this time.
