“I remember a day when I broke down and cried. After several days with deceased patients, I see how my colleagues struggle with CPR on a seriously ill patient. A patient that I cared for myself for several days.”
Today, the Image of the Year contest, Sweden’s best photojournalism award, was decided.
In the Portrait Feature category, Aftonbladet photographer Anderas Bardell won.
– It feels super fun. It was a report that I struggled with for a long time, and I am very happy that I received the first award for it, he says.
The portraits show medical personnel working in full protective gear during the spring of 2020, at the beginning of the pandemic.
– What I wanted to show with the report was how hard the care staff worked and worked, and how it became a different environment in which to work for those who had all the protective equipment. I wanted to show the marks, that is, the footprints that the protection team left on their faces.
– I also want to thank the care staff who came forward, he says.

“What left the deepest trace was the horror in a patient’s eyes when the person was rushed to the intensive care unit for intubation. The family was then completely unaware of the acute condition that was getting worse.”

“What touched me the most was in a meeting when a doctor told me that we should be prepared for friends and family to die from this disease. Then I understood how serious it could be.”
Sports photo of this year
In the Sportbild category, Aftonbladet photographer Pontus Orre won.
– It feels incredibly fun and honored, he says.
The winning image shows a curious spectator outside a sports arena, trying to catch a glimpse of a competing Armand Duplantis.
– The image probably symbolizes the sporting year 2020 quite well. Partly perhaps many sports enthusiasts recognize themselves in what it has been like to try to catch a glimpse of the sport during the crown pandemic, partly also that Armand Duplantis is our most Swedish athlete promising at the moment, since he is the one who jumps on the scene.
