It was a short time in power for the Peruvian interim president.

Manuel Merino was elected early last week after former President Martín Vizcarra was accused of corruption. The election was greeted by widespread protests, including in the capital Lima. Both Merino and several members of Congress who voted in favor of the impeachment are suspected of various crimes.

The peaceful protests have been met with violence by the police. At least three people have died, one of them a 25-year-old man who was shot in the head with a shotgun, Reuters writes.

At least nine people were injured when the police opened fire. Another 60 people were injured when the police used tear gas against the crowd.

Ann Linde: “Very concerned”

Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde (S) has expressed concern about the violence during the demonstrations:

Deeply concerned about the events in Peru. Express my sorrow for those killed and injured during the protests. Sweden calls on all parties to seek dialogue and a peaceful solution to the crisis“, She writes Twitter.

On Sunday morning, the president of Congress asked Merino to resign, after which the message arrived tonight.
