Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) calls for a fight against Islamism after the terrorist attack in Vienna last week.

In an interview with SVT’s Agenda, Kurz says that terrorism is the result of ideas that are spreading in Austria and other parts of Europe.

– It is important to fight terrorism and the underlying idea, that is, political Islam, with the utmost determination. Islamism.

Kurz also warns of “excessive political correctness” and says it is not a conflict between Christians and Muslims, or between Austrians and immigrants. Instead, he urges all like-minded people to join the fight against Islamism, which he describes as “a poison in society.”

– When young people are seduced, when you incite hatred against our democracy, against our rule of law and against equality between men and women, against equal rights for homosexuals, against Jewish life and much more … If you spread that kind of hatred will always be. Are there people who are putting this hatred into practice?

The message is not new: the Austrian chancellor has been following the same line for several years. As Minister of Integration, he banned foreign funding of religious groups in 2015. After assuming the position of federal chancellor, he closed several mosques in 2018 and expelled several imams, something that soured relations with Turkey.

Even in light of a long list of deadly Islamist acts, French President Emmanuel Macron has taken a tougher stance against what he calls “Islamist separatism.”
