The day before Christmas Eve, the crisis agreement for the staff of the Västra Götaland region was activated. The staffing situation is tense, and care staff have subsequently been called in to get off leave, while being paid extra.
Then followed a Christmas weekend that was unlike any other. The pressure on care was high and the number of COVID-19 patients remained at record levels.

On December 23, 484 crown patients were treated at Västra Götaland hospitals. Five days later, 521 patients need care with covid-19, statistics from the Västra Götaland region show.
55 of the patients are cared for in the intensive care unit (IVA). The last time so many received VAT care for covid-19 was on June 11.
For Sahlgrenska University Hospital, which passed the spring peak on December 22, the situation is also tense. 246 COVID-19 patients are now receiving hospital care in Gothenburg.
