After back problems: Sarah Sjöström returns to ISL

Sjöström left the competition this weekend with his Energy Standard team.

“Unfortunately I have had some minor back problems in the last few days and I follow medical advice to rest,” the star wrote on Instagram at the time.

But now the Swede gives the go-ahead for tomorrow.

– It will not be as tough a program as in my first race, when I ran nine disciplines, it will be much smaller than that. I just want to check the situation on how the rear can handle the load, says Sjöström to SVT Sport.

Tomorrow, Swedes Erik Persson, Michelle Coleman and Louise Hansson will also swim for their Toronto Titans team.

Eight teams advance to the semifinals

Competitions in Budapest are decided at Duna Arena, the same group in which Sjöström succeeded in WC 2017 with three golds and one silver.

ISL is a mixed team competition in short field (25 meter pool) with ten teams that face each other in matches and accumulate points. The basic series is decided in October – November and then the top eight teams reach the semi-finals. The top four teams there will compete in the final at the end of November.

There are strict rules that govern swimmers in the “bubble.” They have to isolate themselves for two weeks in the room if they test positive for COVID-19, the masks are forced almost everywhere and they have to sit alone at every meal in the dining room.

– It’s a little more difficult. Every five days we do covid tests. It is much more difficult than you are used to at home in Sweden, says Sjöström.

You miss competing in front of an audience.

– You greet after winning a race. But who are you saying hi to? laughs the Swede.
