GOTHENBURG. SHL Premiere at Scandinavium

Two of the most interesting teams in the series. All the conditions were there for a hockey party.

Unfortunately, the great cheerleader was kicked out of the party.

Damn we miss you!

The new and young Frölunda were truly worthy of the fact that more than 50 “main party” guests in red t-shirts came to see this premiere on site.

Gothenburg came into play with seven players who are 20 or younger. It certainly has not been a normal condition in Gothenburg in recent years.

Roger Rönnberg has returned to work with younger players.

A first installment came when 20-year-old Linus Nässén elegantly played 2-0 at the end of the first period.

The second came with eight minutes to go in the middle period, when 18-year-old Lucas Raymond determined the end result when he clinically scored 3-0 in power play. The six-foot giant Elmer Söderblom, 19, looked really interesting at times.

Another piece of news is that game genius Ryan Lasch is no longer in the team’s lineup. Frölunda began her new life without the American by scoring the first goal of the match in the match’s first power play.

Patrik Carlsson’s projectile was headed for Jonas Gunnarsson’s head, the HV goalkeeper pushed it away and the puck went in.

So similar but so different

I don’t know how many SHL premieres I’ve followed at Scandinavium locations

This may have been the fifth.

Or sixth.

My Scandinavium releases tend to follow a similar pattern. This time Gothenburg received sunny (!), Windless (!!) and 20 degrees.

The walk along the (usually) busy Avenyn to Götaplatsen. Left along Berzeliigatan. Pass through the pubs with the glass-enclosed open-air cafes where both local and visiting fans often recharge.

Further down to Scandinavium and the seething crowd outside the corrugated iron clad spaceship.

This opening day was really long like the others. But it is still so totally different. Because outside of Scandinavium it was empty. “We miss you,” the message flashed outside.

Inside the arena it was even empty. It was a luxurious Kafka atmosphere.

No shadow on Frölunda as organizer or the two teams on the ice. He really did his best in a difficult situation to say the least.

A premiere in a packed Scandinavium – a premiere in a completely empty Scandinavium.

The contrasts can’t be much higher, at least not in the SHL world.

Frölunda was better at most things

But they sent me mainly to monitor what was happening on the ice. And beforehand, Frölunda and HV71 felt like two of the most exciting teams in the series. Two top teams with tips.

Now it never got really exciting. There were no giant differences, but they were still clear. Frölunda was stronger, more precise, more skilled, and broader. The protagonists led.

And not least, Frölunda was more efficient in numerical superiority.

If HV71 is going to be involved in shaking up the best teams this season, it will take more than what Jönköping’s band showed this afternoon.

It could have been more than 3-0 after two periods.

Dern mentioned that the first chain flashed several times, otherwise very soft. I understood that the injured Johannes Kinnvall would be missing from the power game, but not that he seemed so eager.

Rather than bring positive energy, the game turned demoralizing in numerical superiority.

Frölunda scored in his first two power games. HV71 barely fired a shot during the top two at 0-2 early in the intermission period.

There was the biggest difference between the teams.

But there was more.

The great star sent signals

The home team turned the game around in a more efficient and better way. One big reason is a much more mobile rear. There I see the big difference between the team from last season and this year. Your back feels twice as good as at the same time a year ago. Less.

Stefan Elliot sometimes felt more front than rear.

Jan Mursak must be one of the smartest and most skilled players in the league. Something always happened when the Slovenian was on the ice. And when the big star of the team, right in front of his own booth, throws himself and covers shots in the box play at the 3-0 position, he sends signals.

The good news about this pandemic is that if the importance of the audience has been underestimated in any way, there is no longer a place for it.

I hope it almost hurts that you come back soon.

We miss you!
