A shameful media campaign against Ebba Busch

It has always been clear that there is no greater love between the media in general and the Christian Democrats. But the offensive that is now taking place against the party’s leader, Ebba Busch, is unworthy and surprising.

The now sadly nationally known house dispute is getting too stressed, as if it were something inappropriate or even corrupt. The proportions and angles are beyond reasonableness, but here they have eroded blood. Of course, she is gratefully received by her political opponents, who have long vowed to make both her and the party she leads suspicious.

Unfortunately, that can work. Most Swedes do not get involved in politics 24 hours a day, but only participate in what is broadcast in the general news flow, and there is the image of a young party leader who has fought against an elderly man. . His version of the story barely has space. When Marcus Oscarsson on TV4 tried to nuance the image, it took off.

It should be purely tactical Busch may have pulled out of the house deal before going so far as to go to court. But even a politician and party leader must be able to claim their right. It’s hard enough to get people involved in politics, and this story is unlikely to attract more people.

Behind all this is an attempt by a divorced party leader to make the so-called everyday puzzle go hand in hand with joint custody of the children by buying a nearby home. Everything seemed clear until the seller’s relatives intervened and the purchase was suddenly canceled. As contact attempts have failed, it has now ended up in court. Obviously, it was expected to be enough to threaten media attention.

So it has been, where Expressen started and others fell on the fly, with a rather one-sided and incomplete picture. Except for Aftonbladet (which is Expressen’s closest competitor) which on the news site earlier this week gave a different picture and background of what happened. In another part of the same newspaper, however, it sounds different. SVT also treats it like it’s the biggest scandal in many years.

Sad to see, but quite consistently, given that many in the media genuinely think small about Ebba Busch and the Christian Democrats. Not surprisingly, various polls on the views of the journalists’ union often show that there is hardly any other than the Christian press who is sympathetic to the KD.

Busch is also the subject of a preliminary investigation into serious libel by the home seller’s representative in a social media post where he gave his opinion on the matter. Something that critics of course also devoured with holes and hair, although it is far from certain that it will get anyone anywhere. Few even seem to have tried to take his side of the story.

This is not included politics to do, but why lose a golden opportunity to squeeze for her and, by extension, KD? This is especially true because the party has fallen a bit in opinion polls, although it is also something that must be qualified. It is always easier to try to seduce someone who is at a supposed disadvantage.

Social media accounts linked to the Social Democrats have been quick to use this to launch propaganda in order to smear their opponent. Given the already low level expressed by the leading Social Democrats with their tan and their suspicions of the democratic mindset of the KD and also the moderates, this is not surprising.

But is this really the level we want in the political debate? And there is a year and a half left for the elections!

This is an editorial that expresses the political line of the newspaper. Nya Wermlands-Tidningen’s political label is conservative.
