Ruhollah Zam, 47, was arrested in October 2019 after the Iranian regime managed to lure the journalist back to the country. In June this year he was sentenced to death, accused of “corruption against the land”. The indictment is often used in alleged cases of espionage or attempts to overthrow the Iranian regime.
Ruhollah Zam was behind the AmadNews news channel and had a channel on the popular chat application Telegram in Iran. According to the Iranian authorities, it must have encouraged violence and inspired national protests in the fall of 2017. The profile of the opposition has denied the allegations.
“Hard blow to freedom of expression”
France has previously criticized the death sentence against Ruhollah Zam, calling it “a severe blow to freedom of speech and of the press in Iran.”
The verdict was carried out early Saturday morning local time.
Iran has come under fire in the fall for its use of executions.
Among other things, the case of the Swedish researcher Ahmadreza Djalali has received a lot of attention around the world. Djalali was sentenced to death in Iran in 2017 and has been imprisoned in the country ever since. Several foreign authorities and Nobel laureates have committed to the immediate release of Djalali.
