A forest with great natural values and which was intended to be used as a recreational area has been cut down by mistake, reports Göteborgs-Posten.
The trees were around one hundred years old in the 6,500 square meter area in Öjersjö, in the municipality of Partille, which has now been leveled. There were between 60 and 80 specially protected oaks and firs, valuable swamp forests that prevented mud from entering a nearby lake, as well as protected frogs, bats and birds.
– It was very sad to see him. Hard to understand. The only thing he could think of was how this could happen, says municipal ecologist Karin Lindblad Johansson, to GP.
A new residential area is being built next to the cleared forest and the municipality suspects that it is in connection with the work that a contractor demolished the wrong area.
The municipality has reported the contractor to the police and will demand financial compensation. Karin Lindblad Johansson thinks it could be several million crowns.
