A residential and commercial extension in Gothenburg’s Majorna district caught fire overnight Thursday. Residents of between five and ten households have been forced to evacuate.

– There are several cars that have been burned and have been adjacent to a residential building that in turn has started to burn, says Sebastian Börjesson, duty officer in the police in the West region.

The alarm went off shortly before one in the morning and, according to the rescue service, it was blazing hot at first. Therefore, twelve fire trucks and two management vehicles were dispatched to the scene, which relatively quickly managed to control the fire.

– We judge here that we put a lot of fire trucks to get a good effect and we did. We are now investigating the winds and their possible spread in all directions, says Kalle Kivistö, alarm and control operator for the rescue service in Greater Gothenburg.

It is not yet clear how the fire started, but several cars are said to have been completely destroyed, according to police.

The rescue service will be on site for the rest of the night. No injuries were reported.
