A billion more for the school next year

Next year, schools and independent schools will receive a SEK 1 billion booster next year to use it for more teaching hours and a better working environment.

– We see that many have not been able to hire the staff they need, we also see that there is a reduction in health and school support functions. It also gets to lay off teachers and this affects the core activities of the country’s municipalities, says Roger Haddad, the Liberals’ education policy spokesman.

Investments will also be made in law schools and homework assistance to increase the chances that students will be eligible for the high school program or to pass their high school diploma.

More money is also being contributed to implement the initiatives in the so-called professional programs, where professionals or experts in the field already have the opportunity to retrain as teachers.

In total, there will be an additional 1.6 billion for the school in 2021.

“Absolutely necessary”

Åsa Fahlen from the National Union of Teachers says that reinforcing the school is very positive and absolutely necessary. But it is also important to observe how the money is used.

– If you now say that money can be used to improve the work environment, you can not invest in everything around you but in the situation in the classroom at the moment so that teachers have a reasonable workload, he says.

Åsa Fahlen believes it is wise to make an investment now to reduce the effects of the loss of consciousness that arose during the corona pandemic.

– If you had to translate the loss into hours of knowledge, it would mean large sums in the long run. We know that even this fall, many students and teachers will be absent or alternate with digital teaching. You should be home if you have symptoms, she says.

Increased funding for universities

Universities and colleges will receive an additional 3.4 billion SEK next year, a total of SEK 13.6 billion over the next four years. This includes more core funding.

– If you do not have a basic research of sufficient quality, you can say that it is like cutting the branch on which the research is based, says Maria Nilsson, spokeswoman for research policy of the Liberals during the press conference.

Investments are also made in research infrastructure and so-called centers of excellence. The Swedish Research Council and research councils also receive more money.
