Lars Calmfors was one of the few who at the beginning of the crown crisis criticized the government for not daring to make its own decisions while also listening to other experts.
– In the spring, the risk of the general spread of the infection was miscalculated, then it was thought that it would decrease quite quickly and the increase that has taken place now was overlooked, says Lars Calmfors.
According to him, the government’s biggest mistake is that it has allowed the Swedish Public Health Agency to control decision-making to prevent the spread of the infection in Sweden. At the international level, the strategy that Sweden has chosen has been pointed out as extreme, and even within the borders of our country, other experts outside the Swedish Public Health Agency have expressed strong criticism.
– When it comes to infection control strategy, it is not possible to land on anything other than a huge failure.
“Following the expert authorities so slavishly is wrong”
Calmfors also accuses the majority of the opposition of being too passive and settled for allowing the Public Health Agency to take over.
– It is true that it is a good tradition to listen to expert knowledge and expert authorities, but following expert authorities so expertly is wrong. This is not done in other areas, for example in economic policy. Had he listened more to other medical experts both in Sweden and internationally, he could have chosen a much better strategy and it would have saved lives, says Lars Calmfors.
SVT has asked the government for a comment, but hence the message is that they refuse to comment on this criticism.
