Is it a coup attempt?
– In late March, the United States Department of State promised a reward of SEK 150 million to anyone who can arrest Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro and take him to the United States, where he will be accused of smuggling cocaine. One of those interested in obtaining the reward is the American military veteran Jordan Goudreau, who runs a security company in Florida. In a video last Sunday, he admits that he planned the invasion and that two of his men have been arrested. Maduro accuses the United States government of being behind the attempted coup and has shown the passports of US citizens on television, saying they “thought they were Rambo.”
What went wrong
– Despite the fact that Venezuela is a country on the steep slope, its security service is intact. The regime can rely on the Cuban security service that has infiltrated the opposition to Cuba and Venezuela in Florida. His spies certainly found out about the plans beforehand and were able to secure the regime in Venezuela. When the two Americans and eleven other people attempted to disembark with fishing boats, the army was waiting for them. Eight people have been shot dead, but the information has not been confirmed. Maduro’s right-hand man, the wanted Diosdado Cabello, who is described as the leader of the regime’s cocaine cartel, has released a movie clip showing masked men leading the captured American mercenaries to a helicopter.
What does arrest mean?
– Now the Venezuelan regime has received the hostage it so badly wanted. Having two American citizens in prison means that the regime has something to negotiate with the United States in the future. Maduro says the men are part of a conspiracy based on opposition leader Juan Guaidó, who has declared himself president of Venezuela and has the support of some 60 countries, including Sweden. Juan Guaidó doubts the version of the regime and says that Maduro is using the coup attempt to change the focus of various violent events in recent days. Venezuela’s capital Caracas has been rocked by settlements among various criminal gangs and in a prison, inmates have rebelled with a deadly result.
