Yahya Hassan just turned 24 years old. Five days ago, the mother of the Danish-Palestinian poet found him dead in his apartment, and on Tuesday afternoon he was buried in Aarhus.

Around 300 people gathered during the afternoon sun in the Muslim cemetery at Vestre Cemetery. Hundreds of people walk near the coffin in the cemetery in images and videos of the funeral.

Peaceful and respectful

During the crown crisis, Denmark introduced a strict ban on public gatherings to prevent the spread of infection, but burials are not included in the ban. However, the authorities recommend that the recommendations for physical distance also be kept here.

Yahya Hassan’s late uncle, an imam, held the ceremony, reports BT. One of the imams of the place paid tribute to the young poet who said before his death:
“I was born a Muslim and I want to die a Muslim,” writes Ekstrabladet. Among the mourners at the funeral were friends and family and prominent cultural figures. The atmosphere was calm and respectful according to the media on the site. Still crying came from various directions through the Imam’s silence and prayers.

Celebrated and controversial

During his short life, Yahya Hassan managed to be very loved and highly controversial. At age 18, she debuted in 2013 with the “Yahya Hassan” collection of poems, an exciting settlement with power structures, religious oppression, and a growing environment in the suburb. It became the best-selling debut collection of poems in Denmark.
