In late March, the bomb went off: Longtime star Stina Nilsson announced that she was going to switch sports and launch a biathlon company.
The news received with enormous surprise.
– My basic idea was to run cross-country skiing for other Olympics and then change after the 2022 season. But due to my injury, I was given a lot of time to think and test the launch and I feel like I really don’t want to wait any longer. It’s too much fun for that, Nilsson explained in a press release.
Shortly thereafter, SportExpress was able to say that Stina Nilsson joined the Lima SKG biathlon club, obtained a license for her own rifle, and started sneaking along with new national team coach Jean-Marc Chabloz. But she still doesn’t seem very clear about cross-country skiing.
“Very hard for her”
Nilsson has signed a new three-year agreement with the IFK Mora long club.
– Yes, that’s right, says President Tomas Bredberg.
What does that mean?
– I might play as a guest in some races sometimes, when it fits on the calendar. It depends on how you do in the biathlon and how the race schedule looks.
He continues:
– We are especially observing the SM, so that she can participate in some individual race and the relay. But she focuses on biathlon, she is number one.
Tomas Bredberg says Stina Nilsson called him in early March and explained that he would launch a biathlon company. Then he had two years left in his agreement with IFK Mora.
– It was very difficult for her to tell me about this, but I supported her and told her that she did well.
Did about the contract
Were you surprised that she still wanted to stay at IFK Mora?
– He was actually one of the first to say: “Of course I want to keep going to the ski club”. You must be registered with a length club to compete in length, and she was not going anywhere else. But we had to sign a new contract, so she had a 100 percent investment in cross-country skiing. We had to reformulate that.
Is it getting worse now I guess?
– It will be a little different, since she runs fewer competitions. But she still becomes a good ambassador for the ski club. She will help us market certain events, inspire our youth, and even assemble our racing costume sometimes.
But is there nothing stuck on the competitions?
– No, nobody knows what the next season will be like. She does not have a molded place in the World Cup, but first she will have to go to the IBU Cup to qualify. We will see how it goes and if there will be opportunities to compete for us … but I know how focused Stina is and I am convinced that she will do well in the biathlon adventure.
