In a report to the Swedish Electrical Safety Agency, Clara Lindström says she was on the SL commuter train on the Uppsala-Stockholm route when it happened. The phone’s charger abruptly exploded. “It was small and smelled burned,” he writes in his report. The charger should have been an original Apple charger.
– I was listening to music while the phone was charging. Suddenly it was so small and it smelled burnt. I really didn’t understand what was happening, says Clara Lindström.
She says the phone worked fine, but all the charger and cable were broken. The cover itself remained in contact and was sooty, as if it had been burned.
Last Tuesday, July 14, the Swedish Electrical Safety Authority assumed that the mobile charger could pose a danger and that it is recommended to disconnect it when not in use. Recently, there have been several fires suspected to be due to a loader, and so far this year the Swedish Security Agency has received nine reports. In total, the authority receives around 200 notifications of dangerous electrical products in six months: mobile chargers represent a fairly large part.
– We can probably expect to receive around 18 pieces related to mobile chargers this year, says Joca Kostic, market control inspector at the Swedish Electrical Safety Agency.
According to him, it is often a matter of carelessness in the production process, especially when it comes to the original charger. But more often, the incoming reports are about your hacked copy.
“We have found in many cases that insulation is not enough, which means it can burn, explode, or cause electric shock when overheated,” says Josca Kostic.
You should avoid buying chargers on websites whose players are outside the EU, as the same rules do not apply here. And in addition to manufacturing defects, it is common to misuse the consumer, that is, the product is not used correctly.
– A common example is that you use the charger even if the cable is worn, to avoid damage to the cable, so it should not be folded. We also recommend removing the charger from the wall outlet when not in use. If you leave it behind, you wear it out unnecessarily, says Joca Kostic.
But no matter what outlet she uses, Joca is hard to believe.
– Without investigating the Clara Lindström charger case, I can’t imagine that it will matter if you charge the phone at home, on the train or on the trip. The important thing is to keep the charger under control when the phone is plugged in, says Jovac Kostic.
