Deputy state epidemiologist Anders Wallensten commented on the new figures in the SVT broadcast:
– We see that the numbers may be a little lower than expected, but on the other hand it is weekend and, therefore, they are also uncertain. Unfortunately, these numbers today are not a correct indication of where we are, but we will have to wait until after the weekend before we can get the correct page.
Anders Wallensten believes it is too early to jump to conclusions and says Sweden has had a trend in the past where reported figures decline significantly over the weekend, but rise afterward.
“My hope is, of course, that it won’t, but chances are it’s low numbers that will increase since the rest of the notifications arrive,” he says.
Higher mortality than neighboring countries.
A total of 2,669 people have been registered as deceased with confirmed covid-19 in Sweden. Infectious physician Erik Salaneck of the Uppsala Academic Hospital believes that authorities should examine the high death rates in Sweden compared to other Nordic countries.
– We must realize that we have a higher mortality rate than our neighboring countries. It is significantly higher and we must consider this in light of the fact that we have had a different strategy than that of our neighboring countries. Is it just because of this or not? he says at SVT’s Weekend Studio.
Public health authority press secretary Sara Rörbecker writes in an email to SVT News that “the development of the epidemic and the death toll is something that is being closely watched now” but that it is too soon to summarize in this situation. He also notes that covid-19 is spreading in elderly care in Sweden and that the death toll reflects that.
“Deeply unhappy”
Anders Wallensten tells SVT that it is deeply unfortunate that the infection has taken place in nursing homes in Sweden and that one must assess how it has gone and what steps can be taken.
Is there a way to think about the strategy?
– Of course, we have to think about how we can prevent many deaths, but it must also be remembered that other countries that have suffered a serious fall have this ahead of them, they have very few infected, says Anders Wallensten.
