Last Friday, March 26, Princess Sofia gave birth to a son at Danderyd Hospital in Stockholm. The son of the little prince is the third child of the couple, but the first to be born without being an official part of the royal family. In 2019, Carl XVI Gustav announced that he would limit the number of children who become part of the official royal family and therefore it is clear from birth that the new prince-son will not receive a formal title with associated requirements.
Although the boy will not receive any apparitions or any formal title, he can still be called “prince” and can be assigned a dukedom. On Sunday, the king convenes a supposed council in the royal palace, an official meeting where the name, title and duchy of the new prince are presented.
In a royal birth, a traditional church ceremony, Te Deum, is also held in the Castle Church. The royal family will gather for this Thanksgiving service during the day.
The couple’s former children, Prince Alexander and Prince Gabriel, were born in 2016 and 2017.

In a royal birth, a council is held. The King summons a council with the support of ch. § 3 of the form of government that establishes that the government meets in council during the presidency of the head of state. Among other things, counseling is carried out at the initiative of the King in a royal birth.
At council, the King informs the government of the following: title, first name, last name, and dukedom / duchess assigned for the heir to the throne. The council takes place the day after the birth, unless the birth takes place on a Saturday when the council takes place the following Monday.
