Ikea hit by Suez Canal stop

Ikea is one of the companies affected by the stop in the Suez Canal. More than 100 containers of Ikea products are on the Ever Given ship, which has been blocking the canal for several days.

The furniture giant also has containers on the ships that are unable to cross the canal due to the stop. Exactly how many there are is something the company is investigating at the moment, says Mattias Hennius, press officer at Ikea Sweden.

Create bottlenecks

“When there are stops in our transports, of course, we investigate other alternative ways of transporting our products, all so that our customers are not affected. Whether this particular ship stranded in the Suez Canal may affect customers in Sweden in particular, I cannot say today, “writes Mattias Hennius in an email to TT.

According to him, these are Ikea products that will be sold in many different markets and Ikea is currently researching exactly what is in these containers.

It is, therefore, a 400-meter-long boat that basically crosses the canal. Currently, just over 200 vessels are said to queue to cross the Suez Canal, which is a major traffic route with an impact on world trade. Some ships have been redirected to take the detour through the Cape of Good Hope, that is, throughout Africa.

Of all the containers transported by ship on the canal, about 15,000 six-meter containers are used each week on their way to or from Sweden.

It affects the industry

Danish transport and logistics group Maersk has several vessels affected by the call, one of which is destined for Sweden, DI writes.

Currently, several Swedish companies are trying to get an idea of how they are affected by the stop in the Suez Canal. One of them is the vehicle manufacturer Volvo Cars, which ships the components necessary for the production of automobiles through the channel.

– So far we have not been affected by any interruptions. But the uncertainty about the development is very great and of course we are following the situation closely while maintaining a very close relationship and discussing with our logistics partners how we should handle this if it turns into something long term, says Maria Dagman, spokesperson press release from Volvo Cars to DI.

The Kappahl clothing company has two containers lined up to cross the canal, writes Svd.

According to an analysis by the credit rating agency Moody’s, Europe’s manufacturing and automotive industries have been identified as the industry at risk of being most affected by the shutdown.
