Former Canadian diplomat on trial against China

Kovrig is charged with espionage and the trial will take place behind closed doors. The case has sparked international outrage and US officials raised the diplomat’s fate in bilateral talks with China recently.

Michael Kovrig was arrested by Chinese police in December 2018 along with another Canadian citizen: Michael Spavor.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is now demanding that both be released by China. It says that the arrest of Kovrig and Spavor and the time they spent in captivity is “unacceptable.”

Michael Spavor’s case was tried by a Chinese court last week, also behind closed doors. No verdict has yet been reached.

The arrest of Kovrig and Spavor took place in connection with a diplomatic crisis that erupted between China and Canada after Meng Wanzhou, daughter of the founder of Chinese technology company Huawei, was arrested in Canada as a result of a US arrest warrant. China claims that the detention of diplomats is unrelated to the crisis.
