Images from the border crossing between mainland China and Hong Kong show the eight people, wearing black hoods, being escorted by police.

They were part of a group of twelve who were dubbed “The Hong Kong 12” in the local media.

The group was arrested by the Chinese Coast Guard in August 2020 after traveling by boat to nearby Taiwan. China singled out the passengers on the ship as people with connections to the widespread democratic demonstrations in Hong Kong 2019.

They were charged, among other things, with riots, attempted arson and manufacture of explosives. The trials against the twelve were held behind closed doors during the fall.

Two of the twelve were returned to Hong Kong in December last year. The last two of the group are still incarcerated in China.
