The trial of one of the two Canadian citizens who has been imprisoned in China for more than two years took place this Friday, according to the Canadian embassy in China. The second trial is scheduled for Monday.
The first to come out was businessman Michael Spavor.
According to an employee of the Canadian embassy, neither he nor other diplomats were admitted to the courtroom where the trial took place. Unsurprisingly, no verdict has been announced.
Observers have said that if the two men are convicted it could ultimately facilitate reaching diplomatic agreements leading to their return to Canada.
Michael Spavor and former diplomat Michael Kovrig were arrested in December 2018. They are suspected of espionage, but according to Canada, false accusations are behind the arrests.
The arrests took place in connection with a diplomatic crisis that erupted between China and Canada after Meng Wanzhou, daughter of the founder of Chinese technology company Huawei, was arrested in Canada due to a US arrest warrant.
