Four detained police officers were released in connection with protests in Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince on Wednesday, local media reported. The street protests have been going on for five days.
An economic and political crisis in the poor country has led to a sharp increase in kidnappings and killings as gangs have taken control of parts of the capital.
Masked and heavily armed people from a group calling itself Phantom 509, who describe themselves as dissatisfied cops and ex-cops, tell local media that their colleagues had been jailed on false grounds.
The group also says they are protesting that authorities have yet to demand the return of the bodies after four police officers were killed in an unsuccessful raid on a gang on Friday.
On Wednesday, President Jovenel Moïse declared a month-long state of emergency in some of the worst gang-controlled areas to allow state security forces to regain control of the situation.
